Ajoyo Celebrates Adire Heritage with Guinness World Record Attempt in Lagos
Last weekend, Lagos witnessed a remarkable convergence of culture enthusiasts and fashion influencers as they gathered for the Ajoyo Guinness World Records Attempt. This vibrant event was meticulously organized to celebrate Nigeria's iconic Adire fabric while ambitiously aiming to break the record for the "Most Photos of People Wearing Adire Patterned Clothing." Participants adorned themselves in various styles of the traditional indigo-dyed textile, transforming the venue into a spectacular display of Adire patterns and cultural pride.
Celebrating Indigenous Craftsmanship and Cultural Symbolism
According to the organizers, the initiative, titled #Ajoyo2026, was designed to celebrate Nigeria's rich heritage while actively promoting Adire as a globally recognized cultural symbol. Olabukola Olajuwon, the representative of Ajoyo, emphasized that the record attempt was created to spotlight indigenous craftsmanship and encourage wider appreciation for locally produced textiles. Officials diligently monitored designated counting zones to ensure strict compliance with the rigorous guidelines set by Guinness World Records, underscoring the event's authenticity and commitment to cultural preservation.
Distinguished Guests and Government Support
The event attracted a host of distinguished guests, including HRM Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, Ojaja II; Tunde Aka Bashorun, Managing Director of CardForte; Elliot Sangoleye, Divisional Head of Digital Banking at Providus Bank; and Deoye Ojuroye, Executive Director of Providus Bank, along with his wife, Dasola Ojuroye. The record attempt received significant support from Lagos and Ogun states, represented by key officials such as Oluwatoyin Atanda-Rufai, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Establishments and Training; Zainab Oluwabusola Idowu, Special Assistant to the Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture; and Prince Bola Basibo, Senior Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Culture and Tourism.
This gathering not only highlighted the beauty and significance of Adire but also reinforced the collaborative efforts between cultural advocates and government bodies to elevate Nigeria's traditional arts on the global stage.
