Northern Christian Leaders Condemn Persistent Attacks During Easter Holy Season
The Forum of Northern Christians, operating under the umbrella of the Northern Christian Association (NCA), has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as persistent and escalating attacks across Northern Nigeria. The group asserts that this troubling trend has cast a dark shadow over the Easter celebrations, transforming a period meant for joy and spiritual reflection into one marked by grief and fear.
Recent Violent Incidents in Jos and Kaduna
The Northern Christian leaders specifically reacted to recent violent assaults that occurred on Palm Sunday in Jos, Plateau State, and parts of Kaduna State. These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of several innocent lives, leaving families bereaved and communities displaced. The incidents, particularly in Jos North, disrupted preparations for Easter, forcing many to observe the holy season in an atmosphere of uncertainty and recurring violence.
In a press statement released to mark the Easter celebration, NCA Chairman Reverend Joseph John Hayab and Secretary General Bishop Mohammed Naga expressed deep concern. They lamented that instead of experiencing the customary joy and spiritual reflection associated with Easter, numerous communities across Northern Nigeria are grappling with an environment defined by sorrow and instability.
Widespread Insecurity Across Multiple States
The Forum highlighted that the insecurity is not confined to Plateau State alone. It pointed to ongoing violence in Benue, Borno, Niger, and Taraba States, where killings and abductions persist unabated. Many communities in these regions continue to struggle with violence, displacement, and pervasive fear, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Northern Nigeria.
According to the Forum, the recurring pattern of attacks during Christian holy seasons raises serious questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures. It questioned the ability of authorities to adequately protect citizens during such critical periods, emphasizing that this failure undermines public safety and trust.
Calls for Government Action and Community Unity
Reverend Hayab warned that the continued recurrence of these violent incidents risks normalizing violence and deepening the suffering of affected communities. He stressed that this erosion of public confidence in the government's capacity to guarantee safety is a significant concern that demands immediate attention.
The NCA called on the Federal Government and security agencies to move beyond routine condemnations and demonstrate a stronger commitment through sustained and strategic action. The group urged authorities to focus on ending the cycle of violence and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice, thereby restoring a sense of security and accountability.
Additionally, the Forum urged religious, traditional, and community leaders to intensify efforts at promoting unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across Northern Nigeria.
