Pope Leo XIV Appoints Nigerian Bishop Kukah to Vatican Council on Human Development
In a significant development for the Catholic Church in Nigeria, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Diocese of Sokoto to a prominent position within the Vatican's administrative structure. The Nigerian cleric has been named as a Member of the Council of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, a body that plays a crucial role in shaping the Church's teachings on global social issues.
Official Confirmation and Global Collaboration
The appointment was officially confirmed through a statement released by Fr Pascal Salifu, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Sokoto. According to the statement, Bishop Kukah received the appointment in a formal letter from the Pope, which was signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Peter Parolin.
This appointment places Bishop Kukah among distinguished Catholic leaders from around the world who will serve a five-year term on the Council. He will collaborate with prominent figures including Cardinal Walter McElroy of Washington, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Bologna, Cardinal Conrad Krajewski of Poland, and Archbishop Fulgence Mugalu of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Dicastery's Mission and Bishop Kukah's Role
The Dicastery for Integral Human Development addresses critical social themes within Catholic teachings, focusing on areas such as environmental stewardship, human rights protection, migration issues, human development initiatives, and social ethics. Bishop Kukah's appointment to this body represents a continuation of his service, as he was first appointed to the Council in 2022 when it was reconstituted by Pope Francis.
Bishop Kukah expressed both humility and gratitude upon receiving this appointment, stating: "The thematic areas of the Dicastery fit perfectly into my areas of research and pastoral interest, and I look forward to contributing to helping to infuse the Catholic ethos into public life in a world that has become severely wounded by human greed."
Distinguished Service Record in Vatican Diplomacy
Bishop Kukah brings extensive experience in Vatican diplomacy to this new role. His service within the Vatican dates back to 1996 when he was first appointed by Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He was subsequently re-appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 to continue this important work.
His international diplomatic experience includes participation in the Vatican delegation to Qatar in 2005 and representation of the Vatican on the Advisory Board of the King Abdulazeez International Centre for Interreligious Dialogue (KAICIID) from 2018 to 2025.
Additional Appointments and Historical Significance
In addition to Bishop Kukah's appointment, the Council has also appointed Dr Emmanuel Okechukwu, Director of Health Services at the Catholic Secretariat, to contribute his expertise alongside priests, religious leaders, and lay members to the Dicastery's work.
This appointment marks a historic moment as it represents the Vatican's first formal recognition of a Nigerian cleric in this high-level capacity. It reflects both Bishop Kukah's growing global influence within the Catholic Church and the Church's commitment to addressing pressing social challenges through diverse international perspectives.
The appointment follows another recent Vatican recognition of Nigerian clergy, as Pope Leo XIV previously appointed Nigerian priest Father Anthony Onyemuche Ekpo as the new assessor for general affairs at the Secretariat of State, placing him at the heart of one of the Vatican's most central administrative departments.
