Olubadan's Absence Threatens Ibadan Chiefs' Coronation Amid Political Tensions
Uncertainty and heightened political tensions surround the planned coronation of three high chiefs in Ibadanland today, as Olubadan Oba Rashidi Ladoja has reportedly taken a defiant stance against the Oyo State government. Credible palace sources confirm that the monarch has directed a boycott of the ceremony and has left Ibadan for Lagos, a move widely interpreted as a strong signal of his resolve in the escalating standoff.
Monarch's Defiance and Departure
Sources indicate that Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, is prepared for a confrontation with the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde. He has signaled his intention to stay away from the coronation and is urging the affected high chiefs to do the same. This development has significantly heightened tension within both the traditional institution and the political space, drawing a clear battle line between the Olubadan and the state government.
A palace source disclosed that Oba Ladoja traveled to Lagos for an undisclosed engagement and had not returned as of the time of reporting. "Kabiyesi left Ibadan for Lagos. It is most likely that he will return tomorrow to preside over the elevation ceremony of the affected high chiefs," the source said. However, the source expressed uncertainty over whether the Olubadan would personally officiate at the ceremony, adding, "I cannot say whether Baba will preside over the ceremony or not. All I know is that he is not in town at the moment."
Government's Stance and Ceremony Details
Despite the monarch's absence, the Oyo State Government has affirmed that the ceremony will proceed as scheduled. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Demola Ojo, stated, "The elevation of the three high chiefs to the status of Obas in Ibadanland will be held on Friday at Mapo Hall." The high chiefs set to be elevated are Sharafadeen Ali, Kol Babalola, and Akeem Adewoyin.
Concerns have emerged over the Olubadan's absence from Ibadan ahead of the event, fueling speculation that he may not be present. The development has also raised questions about whether Senator Sharafadeen Ali will attend to receive his beaded crown, with analysts suggesting his elevation could impact his potential participation in the 2027 Oyo State governorship race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political Undertones and Controversy
Insiders reveal that the boycott is partly aimed at shielding Senator Ali, who is said to be at the centre of the controversy surrounding the coronation and its political undertones. A highly placed source disclosed that the Olubadan is fully aware of the powers vested in an Executive Governor and believes that the current political configuration in the state could shift significantly in the near future.
This situation has raised concerns about a potential and unprecedented clash between traditional authority and state power, with the Olubadan's actions seen as a direct challenge to Governor Makinde's administration. The standoff highlights the delicate balance between cultural heritage and modern governance in Nigeria.
Palace Clarification and Denials
In a statement issued by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, the monarch dismissed reports of a rift between him and Governor Makinde, describing such claims as unfounded. The statement maintained that there is no discord between the Olubadan and the governor, emphasising that both parties continue to maintain cordial relations.
According to the palace, Oba Ladoja did not travel out of Ibadan to avoid the coronation earlier scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2026. The statement clarified that the monarch remains in Ibadan and is in good health, actively discharging his responsibilities as the traditional ruler of the ancient city.
The palace also explained that the planned coronation of three high chiefs was postponed following a request by the affected individuals, who reportedly indicated their unavailability for the ceremony. This development has since been conveyed to the Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
The clarification came amid heightened public interest surrounding the proposed coronation and earlier speculation over the monarch's absence, adding another layer of complexity to an already tense situation.
