Lagos State Reiterates Climate Action Commitment at Youth Event
Lagos champions environmental sustainability with youth

The Lagos State government has once again emphasized its strong dedication to addressing environmental challenges through sustainable solutions during a major youth sensitization event held in Alausa over the weekend.

Youth Engagement for Environmental Change

During the 2025 Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Members and Handlers' Sensitisation Programme, government officials highlighted the critical need for collective action against climate change, waste management issues, and environmental degradation. Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, stressed that awareness and personal responsibility form the foundation of effective environmental stewardship.

Represented by Mrs. Monsurat Banire, Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Gaji explained that the program was specifically designed to inspire concrete action and transform mindsets by positioning young people as crucial agents of change in environmental conservation efforts.

Innovative Programs and Recognition

A standout feature of the event was the Eco-Winner Sustainability Tour, an initiative that encourages participants to actively promote sustainability within their schools and local communities. The program rewards excellence and innovation among students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to environmental causes.

Mrs. Esther Olaleye, a Deputy Director in the Environmental Education Unit, noted that this year's edition marked a significant milestone as participants from all six Education Districts gathered in a single location for the first time. This consolidation created unprecedented opportunities for wider participation and greater impact across Lagos State.

Educational Components and Awards

The training session featured an informative lecture delivered by Dr. Lasisi Adedoyin, a Deputy Director in the Environmental Assessment Department. His presentation, titled "Understanding Healthy and Sustainable Environment," provided clear explanations of complex environmental concepts.

Dr. Adedoyin defined climate change as the average condition in a region over an extended period and distinguished between mitigation measures, which prevent climate change, and adaptation measures, which represent adjustable responses to environmental shifts.

The event concluded with prize presentations to outstanding students who distinguished themselves during the sessions. All participants received attractive prizes, reinforcing the government's commitment to recognizing and rewarding environmental advocacy among the youth.

Gaji commended EBC handlers, particularly the dedicated teachers, for their crucial role in translating environmental education into practical impact and bridging the gap between policy and implementation. He advised students to ensure that the knowledge they gain today becomes the foundation for tomorrow's environmental solutions, reminding them that the future truly belongs to them.
