President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated former captain of Nigeria's national football team, William Troost-Ekong, with a prestigious national award. The defender received the honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his distinguished service to the country.
A Proud Moment for the Football Star
The official certificate for the award was delivered to Troost-Ekong on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. This followed a public announcement made the previous night. The 32-year-old centre-back took to social media to confirm the honour and share his heartfelt appreciation.
"I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for conferring on me the MFR national honour," Troost-Ekong wrote. He described the event as a very proud moment for both himself and his family.
Gratitude to Nigeria and the Super Eagles
In his statement, the former captain reflected on the profound connection he has with Nigeria. He credited the nation for shaping his identity and providing the platform to achieve his dreams through football.
"Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football," he stated. "Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people."
Troost-Ekong also sent a strong message of support to the current Super Eagles squad as they began their campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the same day. "As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation, and what we can achieve," he added.
The Official Decree and a Stellar Career
The certificate, which the footballer shared online, contained the formal decree from President Tinubu. It read, in part: "In exercise of the powers vested in me under section 1(4) of the National Honours Act... in recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of your services to our country, Nigeria, HEREBY award to you... Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR)."
This honour comes after a significant chapter in Troost-Ekong's international career. He captained the Super Eagles to a second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire. Following that remarkable achievement, the veteran defender announced his retirement from international football, closing a dedicated chapter of service to the national team.
