Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has expressed outrage over a wedding MC who imposed a strict no-cheating vow on the bride while granting the groom leniency, highlighting what she calls deep-rooted gender inequality in marriage.
In a video shared on social media, the MC is seen addressing the bride, Mirabel, warning her never to cheat even if her husband travels for an extended period. He then prayed that if she ever cheats, she would be caught, disgraced, and sent packing. However, when he turned to the groom, the groom wagged a warning finger, signaling he would not accept such a vow. The MC ended his statement to the groom by saying, “If ever you cheat, may God forgive you,” to which the groom laughed in agreement.
Rita Edochie’s Reaction
Reacting to the video, Rita Edochie wrote: “I AM VERY ANGRY THIS MORNING AND I PRAY THIS IS JUST A JOKE AND A CONTENT… LOOK IF MEN CAN BE EXCUSED BECAUSE THEY ARE ‘POLYGAMOUS BY NATURE,’ THEN WOMEN DESERVE THE SAME GRACE, THE SAME MERCY, AND THE SAME FORGIVENESS. ENOUGH OF THIS GENDER INEQUALITY!! FOR TOO LONG, SOCIETY HAS PREACHED ONE GOSPEL FOR MEN AND ANOTHER FOR WOMEN.”
She continued: “WHEN A MAN IS UNFAITHFUL, MANY ARE QUICK TO CALL IT ‘HIS NATURE’ OR A MOMENT OF WEAKNESS, BUT WHEN A WOMAN COMMITS THE SAME OFFENCE, SHE IS BRANDED, CONDEMNED, AND OFTEN TOLD SHE NO LONGER DESERVES HER HOME. HOW CAN THE SAME ACT PRODUCE TWO DIFFERENT VERDICTS? HOW CAN ONE PERSON BE OFFERED RESTORATION WHILE THE OTHER IS SHOWN THE DOOR?”
Call for Equal Standards
Edochie emphasized that if vows are exchanged equally, standards should apply equally. She said: “IF INFIDELITY IS A SIN, THEN IT IS A SIN FOR BOTH. IF FORGIVENESS EXISTS, THEN IT SHOULD NOT BE RESERVED FOR ONE GENDER. JUSTICE THAT FAVOURS MEN WHILE CRUSHING WOMEN IS NOT JUSTICE, IT IS WITCHCRAFT.”
She added: “A MARRIAGE CANNOT BE BUILT ON A SYSTEM WHERE THE MAN IS EXPECTED TO BE UNDERSTOOD, WHILE THE WOMAN IS EXPECTED TO BE PERFECT. THAT IS NOT FAIRNESS; IT IS PARTIALITY. THE RULES OF MARRIAGE SHOULD NOT CHANGE BASED ON WHETHER THE OFFENDER IS WEARING TROUSERS OR A SKIRT. ACCOUNTABILITY MUST BE EQUAL. MERCY MUST BE EQUAL. DIGNITY MUST BE EQUAL.”
Edochie concluded: “UNTIL WE STOP MEASURING MEN AND WOMEN WITH DIFFERENT SCALES, WE CANNOT HONESTLY CLAIM TO BE DEFENDING THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE. A PRINCIPLE IS ONLY A PRINCIPLE WHEN IT APPLIES TO EVERYONE.”
Social Media Reaction
The video, originally posted by Linda Ikeji on Instagram, has sparked widespread debate online, with many users supporting Edochie’s stance while others defended the MC’s remarks as traditional practice. The incident underscores ongoing conversations about gender roles and expectations in Nigerian marriages.
