The Rhema Christian Church and Towers is set to illuminate the Christmas season with its much-anticipated yearly event, the 'Great Carol Service by Candlelight.' The service is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, at the church's headquarters located in Sango Ota, Ogun State.
A Beacon of Hope and Celebration
Beginning promptly at 5 p.m. within the Champion Peace Cathedral in Ota, this gathering is renowned as one of the region's most uplifting Christmas celebrations. It traditionally draws worshippers from across Ogun State and beyond, creating a unique atmosphere of communal joy and reflection.
This year's service carries the profound theme, "Emmanuel — God With Us," a message sourced from Matthew 1:23 in the Bible. Organisers state that the theme aims to remind the faithful of the miraculous presence of God manifested through the birth of Jesus Christ. It seeks to strengthen believers' faith during a season dedicated to hope and introspection.
Symbolism and Special Highlights
The ceremonial lighting of candles forms the heart of the event, symbolising Christ as the Light of the world piercing through darkness. In a special gesture of love, the church will distribute gifts to all children under the age of fifteen attending the service.
The Presiding Bishop, Archbishop Taiwo Akinola, elaborated on the spiritual significance of the Emmanuel theme. He emphasised that the nativity of Christ provides divine reassurance, especially during challenging times.
"The birth of Jesus Christ assures us that we are never alone. God’s presence is our strength, our comfort and our victory," Archbishop Akinola stated. He further revealed that the evening would transcend traditional worship, incorporating a prophetic dimension. "As we celebrate Christ, we will invoke divine light to break every form of obscurity and usher God’s people into a brighter, more impactful year ahead."
A Cherished Community Tradition
Pastor Tofunmi Opaleye, who heads the Praise and Prayer Department, described the carol service as a cherished highlight of the festive calendar. He noted that it has blossomed into a beloved annual tradition characterised by warmth, unity, and sincere worship.
Pastor Opaleye warmly invited residents of Ota and neighbouring communities to attend in large numbers. "Over the years, the Carol Service by Candlelight has become a time when families reconnect, friends reunite and our community gathers to honour the birth of Christ," he said. "We are inviting families, friends, and worshippers from across the region to join us for this special night of worship."
The event stands as a significant spiritual and social fixture in Ogun State, promising an evening of inspirational music, heartfelt prayer, and communal celebration marking the true essence of Christmas.
