Oyo Governor Presents N891bn 2026 Budget to Assembly

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has presented a massive N891 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly, marking a significant step in the state's economic planning.

Budget Breakdown and Key Allocations

The governor presented the budget, christened "Budget of Economic Expansion," during a special plenary session held at the Assembly Secretariat in Ibadan on November 25, 2025. This represents a substantial increase of N213 billion compared to the 2025 budget.

According to the detailed breakdown, N502 billion (56.7%) has been allocated to capital expenditure, while recurrent expenditure will receive N389 billion (43.6%). This allocation emphasizes the administration's focus on developmental projects.

Key sectoral allocations include:N210 billion (23.5%) for infrastructure development, N155.2 billion (17.4%) for education, N70 billion (7.5%) for healthcare, and N19 billion (2.2%) for agriculture.

Assembly's Response and Oversight Commitment

Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, who also serves as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, praised Governor Makinde for what he described as visionary leadership.

Ogundoyin commended the administration's achievements under the 2025 Budget of Economic Stabilisation and described the budget presentation as "a defining moment in our democratic journey."

The Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to strict oversight, promising that lawmakers will ensure transparency, accountability, and impactful project delivery throughout the 2026 fiscal year.

Legislative Achievements and Future Plans

Highlighting the accomplishments of the 10th Assembly, Ogundoyin revealed that in just two years, the House has passed 32 bills, deliberated on 110 committee reports, moved 125 motions, considered 45 matters of urgent public importance, and adopted over 500 resolutions.

He also noted that the Oyo State House of Assembly remains the first and only state Assembly in Nigeria to establish a Post Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) Unit, demonstrating its dedication to accountability and effective governance.

During the presentation, Governor Makinde highlighted his administration's efforts in improving internally generated revenue without imposing new taxes on residents of the state.

The Speaker used the occasion to bring the governor's attention to concerns raised by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Oyo State chapter, ensuring that all stakeholders' voices are heard in the governance process.
