FCT EXCO Approves Abuja Waste & Traffic Contracts

The Federal Capital Territory Executive Council has given the green light to multiple crucial contracts aimed at transforming waste management and traffic control systems across Abuja.

Major Boost for Waste Management

During Thursday's council meeting presided over by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, significant approvals were granted following presentations by various department heads. Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), confirmed that EXCO ratified contracts for comprehensive waste collection and management services throughout the territory.

The approvals cover operational maintenance of the Wupa Basic Treatment Plant and procurement of monitoring vehicles to enhance sanitation enforcement. Obuah announced that newly contracted operators will commence waste collection operations by Monday, November 17, marking what he described as "a new dawn in the cleanliness and environmental health of the nation's capital."

"We are committed to restoring Abuja's image as one of the cleanest cities in Africa. By Monday, residents will begin to notice significant changes in waste collection and disposal operations across the territory," Obuah stated.

Emergency Interventions and Traffic Modernization

The Satellite Towns Development Department received approval for emergency waste evacuation in Dogon-Gada community, Abuja Municipal Area Council. Director Abdulkadir Zulkifli revealed that the project, awarded to Messrs Dexter 360 Exploits Limited at N111,913,176, will run for four weeks and targets elimination of long-standing waste hazards.

Simultaneously, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services secured approvals for contracts covering card printers, security document printing, and cleaning services. More significantly, EXCO approved maintenance of 34 existing traffic lights and installation of three new ones on strategic city roads.

Chinedu Elechi, Secretary of the Transportation Secretariat, emphasized that "these contracts are a critical part of our traffic modernization agenda. They'll help us reduce congestion, improve safety, and bring greater order to the city's road network."

Administration's Commitment to a Better Abuja

The FCT administration reiterated its determination to restore order, sanitation, and efficient service delivery across the capital city. In a strong statement of purpose, the administration affirmed that their target is "to make Abuja work better for everyone" by directly addressing waste, traffic, and environmental challenges.

"The capital city must reflect the standard of the nation," the administration added, underscoring the broader significance of these infrastructure improvements for Nigeria's international image and residents' quality of life.
