A tragic incident has occurred in France following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory over Arsenal, as violent riots broke out across 15 cities, resulting in the death of one fan and leaving another in intensive care.
Violence Erupts Across France
According to reports, unrest spread through Paris, Rennes, Strasbourg, and Grenoble. Football fans set fires and vandalized shops, with a small group even attempting to storm a police station in the capital.
A 17-year-old male was stabbed multiple times near the Champs Élysées and is now in intensive care. Another man, aged 23, died after crashing his motorcycle into a concrete barrier.
Police Response and Arrests
The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed that 277 individuals have been formally placed in police custody, including 82 minors. Charges range from assaulting police officers to theft, vandalism, and disturbing public order.
In a separate incident, a driver lost control of a car that crashed into a restaurant terrace, injuring two people, one seriously. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 57 police officers were wounded across the affected cities.
Planned Celebrations Proceed
Despite the violence, Nuñez stated that the scheduled celebrations for the team's win at the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower on Sunday afternoon would proceed. He warned that police would respond with firmness and determination to any further unrest.
The PSG team is also set to be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee presidential palace.
