CAS Yet to Rule on Senegal's AFCON 2025 Title Appeal Amid Social Media Rumors
CAS Has Not Reversed CAF's AFCON 2025 Decision on Senegal

Court of Arbitration for Sport Yet to Rule on Senegal's AFCON 2025 Title Appeal

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ignited a major controversy across the continent by stripping Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarding it to Morocco. This unprecedented decision followed incidents during the AFCON final on January 18, 2026, which led to sanctions against both nations by CAF's Disciplinary Board.

Senegal's Immediate Response and Appeal Plans

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has firmly rejected CAF's ruling, invoking Articles 82 and 84 of CAF's regulations, which resulted in Senegal losing the championship and Morocco being granted a walkover 3-0 victory. The FSF has confirmed its intention to appeal this decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Moussa Mbaye, a committee member of the FSF, has addressed circulating rumors on social media suggesting that CAS has already reversed CAF's Appeals Board ruling. He categorically described these claims as "fake news" and emphasized that no decision has been made by CAS to date.

Official Clarification on the Legal Process

"It is not true that they have currently reacted to say they are suspending it already. It is a precautionary measure while waiting to rule on the case," Mbaye stated in an interview with RTS Senegal. He further clarified, "To date, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has not issued any decision in the case opposing the FSF to the CAF, contrary to the information that has been relayed."

Mbaye confirmed that Senegal's legal team is meticulously preparing the necessary documents for the appeal, prioritizing a calm and strategic approach over emotional reactions. "We will not act emotionally, but in a very calm and clear-headed manner to best defend Senegal's interests," he added.

Potential Implications for African Football

The outcome of this case could have profound implications for football across Africa. If CAS upholds CAF's decision to strip Senegal of the title based on off-field rulings, it may establish a precedent where football matches can be decided in boardrooms rather than on the pitch.

Senegal's appeal is expected to rely heavily on the International Football Association Board (IFAB) laws of the game, specifically rules 5.1 and 5.2, which grant referees full authority over match decisions. During the final, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala chose to restart the match after Senegal's protest and ultimately declared Senegal winners after extra time, a decision that is typically considered final under football regulations.

CAF's Official Position and Updated Records

CAF has officially updated its records to reflect Morocco as the 2025 AFCON champions, with Senegal listed as runners-up and Nigeria maintaining third place. This adjustment has been published on CAF's official website, solidifying their stance pending the outcome of Senegal's appeal.

African football enthusiasts and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting CAS's ruling, which is anticipated to shape the future of football governance and disciplinary processes on the continent for years to come.
