Nigerian Journalist Presses FIFA for Timely Decision in World Cup Eligibility Dispute
Prominent Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana has issued a direct appeal to FIFA, urging the global football authority to expedite its ruling on a contentious World Cup eligibility case involving Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The dispute centers on allegations by the Nigeria Football Federation that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during a critical qualifying match.
Background of the FIFA Petition and Allegations
The Nigeria Football Federation formally submitted a petition to FIFA on December 15, 2025, seeking to disqualify DR Congo from the intercontinental playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The NFF contends that the Federation of Congolese Football Associations misrepresented facts to secure approval for the nationality switch of several players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka. According to the petition, these players retained European passports, violating Congolese constitutional provisions that prohibit dual citizenship.
This controversy arose after DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout during the African final, securing their spot in the upcoming playoff. The intercontinental playoff is scheduled to commence in just 16 days in the Mexican cities of Guadalajara and Monterrey, adding urgency to the unresolved case.
Obayiuwana's Critique of FIFA's Handling
In his public statement, Obayiuwana emphasized the validity of Nigeria's case and criticized FIFA for the prolonged delay in delivering a verdict. He highlighted that the postponement appears intentional, given the tight timeline before the playoff matches. Obayiuwana, a former member of the FIFA anti-racism task force, explained that any ruling would likely undergo subsequent appeals through the FIFA Appeal Chambers and the Court of Arbitration for Sport, processes that require substantial time.
"Time is needed for parties to exhaust these judicial processes. Where will that time be, if the initial judgment is not made promptly?" Obayiuwana questioned. He further asserted, "FIFA should deliver a verdict without further delay, no matter what the verdict is. Let football justice not be subverted by running down the clock on purpose."

If FIFA upholds the NFF's petition, Nigeria could replace DR Congo in the intercontinental playoff, where they would face the winner of the semi-final between Jamaica and New Caledonia. Conversely, should the appeal fail, the Nigeria Football Federation has organized a four-nation invitational tournament as an alternative, featuring matches against Iran and Jordan during the international break.
