Senegal Launches Formal Appeal to CAS Over AFCON 2025 Title Controversy
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has officially confirmed that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has filed an appeal challenging the decision to name Morocco as the winners of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). This appeal seeks to overturn the controversial ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which stripped Senegal of their title and declared Morocco the champions, a move that has sparked widespread outrage and allegations of corruption.
Background of the Dispute
In January 2025, Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the AFCON final, securing what appeared to be a historic victory. However, the match was marred by controversy when Senegal's players walked off the pitch in protest after Morocco was awarded a stoppage-time penalty. The players returned after a 17-minute delay, during which Brahim Diaz's penalty for Morocco was saved, and Senegal's Pape Gueye scored an extra-time winner to clinch the title.
Following an appeal by the Moroccan Football Association (FRMF), CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match due to the walk-off, recording the result as 3-0 in favor of Morocco. This decision has been met with fierce criticism from Senegalese officials, who argue it is based on a flawed interpretation of regulations.
Senegal's Stance and Allegations
The Senegalese government has called for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption at CAF, labeling the decision as "unprecedented and exceptionally serious." In a statement, they asserted that the ruling was "a manifestly erroneous interpretation of the regulations, leading to a grossly illegal and deeply unjust decision." They further declared, "Senegal unequivocally rejects this unjustified attempt at dispossession."
Abdoulaye Seydou Sow, secretary general of the FSF, echoed these sentiments, telling Senegalese TV channel RTS 1 that the decision "is a breach of trust that is not based on any rule of law." The FSF has described CAF's action as "an unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision which brings discredit to African football."
CAS Appeal and Next Steps
CAS registered the appeal on March 25, 2026, with the FSF requesting to set aside the CAF decision and declare Senegal as the rightful winners of AFCON 2025. The appeal process is expected to involve a thorough review of the evidence and regulations, potentially setting a precedent for future disputes in African football.
This case highlights ongoing tensions within the sport's governance and raises questions about fairness and integrity in international competitions. The outcome of the CAS appeal will be closely watched by football fans and officials worldwide, as it could reshape the landscape of African football administration.
