Senegal Escalates AFCON 2025 Title Dispute with Formal CAS Appeal
Senegal has taken decisive legal action by filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, following the controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. This move comes after CAF's Appeal Board overturned an initial ruling, awarding Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory instead.
The Controversial Final and Walkout Incident
The dispute stems from the AFCON 2025 final held on January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Senegal staged a dramatic walkout in protest of referee Jean-Jacques Ndala's decision to award a penalty to Morocco in the 90+6th minute. The Teranga Lions remained in the dressing room for over 14 minutes before returning to the pitch following intervention from Liverpool legend Sadio Mane.
Despite the disruption, Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz missed the resulting penalty in the 90+27th minute, with Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saving his Panenka attempt. Midfielder Pape Gueye later scored in the 94th minute, seemingly securing Senegal's second AFCON title.
CAF's Sanctions and Morocco's Successful Appeal
CAF initially sanctioned both Senegal and Morocco for various offenses, including one involving Moroccan player Achraf Hakimi. However, Morocco appealed this decision on January 29, leading the CAF Appeal Board to reverse the initial ruling. The board ultimately stripped Senegal of the title and awarded Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory, sparking widespread reaction across the African football community.
Senegal's Official Response and Strategic Approach
In a strong statement released by the Senegalese Football Federation, executive committee member Moussa Mbaye emphasized that the country will pursue the case to its logical conclusion. Mbaye stated that the appeal aims to protect the interests of the Teranga Lions and ensure proper interpretation of the tournament's rules and regulations.
"We don't act with emotion, but in a very cold and very lucid manner to best serve the interests of Senegal," Mbaye declared in a viral post on social media platform X. The federation's approach appears calculated and methodical, focusing on legal arguments rather than emotional appeals.
CAF President's Position on the Dispute
CAF president Patrice Motsepe has acknowledged Senegal's right to challenge the decision through proper legal channels. Motsepe emphasized that all member nations must be allowed to defend their interests, suggesting that the appeals process represents a normal part of football governance rather than an exceptional conflict.
Fan Reactions and Social Media Commentary
The decision has generated significant discussion among football enthusiasts across Africa. Many fans have questioned the referee's handling of the walkout incident, while others have praised Senegal's measured approach to the appeal process.
One social media user commented on the timing of events: "Why didn't the referee end the match when they forfeit it and allowed to come back to play." Another observer noted Senegal's strategic shift: "Senegal don switch to lawyer mode sharp sharp! CAS appeal filed, no drama, just 'calm and clear headed' like say dem get top barrister for the case."
The appeal to CAS represents the latest chapter in this unfolding football controversy, with Senegal determined to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs through established legal mechanisms rather than public confrontation.
