Troost-Ekong Urges NFF to Revamp Football Structure After World Cup Miss
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has delivered a powerful message to the Nigeria Football Federation following FIFA's dismissal of Nigeria's petition in the 2026 World Cup case. The global football governing body rejected the NFF's attempt to disqualify the Democratic Republic of Congo from the intercontinental playoff over player eligibility concerns.
Nigeria's World Cup Dreams Dashed Again
This marks Nigeria's second consecutive World Cup absence, having previously missed the Qatar 2022 tournament after a defeat to Ghana. The NFF has responded by filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge FIFA's decision, maintaining they have a legitimate case. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will participate in a four-nation invitational tournament in Antalya, Turkey, facing Iran and Jordan during the March break.
Ekong's Candid Assessment
Troost-Ekong, who was benched during the playoff match, offered a frank assessment while serving as a pundit on Bein Sport. "Congo were the better side, they edged it on penalties, Nigeria gave their best, but they came up short, and because of that, there will be some changes," he stated. The Qatar-based defender, who recently retired from international football, emphasized the need to prioritize the country's future.
"I myself retired from international football, but you have to think about what's best for the country and the next generation. This might be one of those moments," Troost-Ekong added, questioning Nigeria's football infrastructure and advocating for sustainable development.
Call for Structural Reforms
The former Premier League star highlighted the necessity of implementing long-term strategies rather than depending solely on Nigeria's abundant talent. "There'll be changes, particularly for big moments like this. In the last two AFCONs, Nigeria has shown their quality. I think we need a serious look at the structures we have in place in Nigeria, really preparing for long-term success," he explained.
Troost-Ekong pointed to successful African nations as models, noting, "When we see some of the nations that have done so well on the continent, they have put the right structure in place for 10 years, 15 years, and not just rely on the talent that we have in Nigeria." He acknowledged Nigeria's undeniable talent, which has produced stars like Victor Osimhen, but urged the federation to learn from countries like Morocco and Senegal.
Vision for the Future
"We need something that's a little bit longer vision, and hopefully that would be something that we'd implement soon, and players, ex-players who have lived there and seen it can help the federation," Troost-Ekong concluded, advocating for collaborative efforts to rebuild Nigerian football. His comments come as Nigeria grapples with another World Cup disappointment, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic improvements to restore the nation's footballing prestige.
