Edo Council Directs Farm Settlers to Relocate from Forested Areas for Enhanced Security
The Acting Chairman of Etsako East Local Council in Edo State, Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, has issued a directive ordering farm settlers residing in forested areas to relocate to nearby towns. This move is part of a comprehensive security operation aimed at bolstering safety across the region. The operation spanned multiple communities, including Ivioghomhe, Izotha, Edgbe along the railway axis, Osholo, Emokwemhe, and Upland-Iviogbe, as well as Igiode and Uzanu, which are situated in one of the most volatile forest corridors bordering Kogi State.
Security Concerns Drive Relocation Initiative
During the operation, Chairman Ekpeson emphasized that the measure is not intended to disrupt lawful farming activities but to ensure all residents operate within identifiable and secure community structures. He highlighted that isolated habitation in dense forests creates vulnerabilities that could be exploited by criminal elements, posing significant risks to both settlers and host communities. "Our responsibility is to protect lives and property," he stated. "We encourage all genuine farmers and residents to integrate within recognised communities, where there is proper oversight and mutual security. This approach will help us distinguish lawful occupants from those who may seek to operate outside the law."
Coordinated Efforts with Security Agencies
The security operation involved a coordinated effort among personnel from the Nigerian Army, local security formations, and community-based vigilante groups. These teams worked collaboratively to comb identified areas and reinforce security presence. Chairman Ekpeson commended the professionalism of the security agencies and reiterated the council's commitment to sustained operations aimed at preserving peace. He reassured residents that agriculture remains a central pillar of the local economy and will continue to receive government support, but stressed that safety considerations must take precedence in light of evolving security challenges.
Call for Community Vigilance and Responsible Land Administration
Ekpeson also called on traditional rulers and community leaders to strengthen vigilance and adopt responsible land administration practices. He urged them to ensure that land allocations are carefully monitored in the interest of public safety and to collaborate with appropriate security agencies for proper profiling of settlers and foreigners in their domains. This, he explained, is essential for easy accountability and enhanced security across the area. The relocation notice is described as a proactive measure designed to foster transparency, enhance surveillance, and build stronger, safer communities throughout the local government area.
