Dispatch Rider Dies in Lagos Truck Collision at Ijesha

A dispatch rider lost his life on Saturday, August 22, 2026, following a collision involving two trucks at Ijesha, on the inward Mile 2 corridor in Lagos State. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.

Details of the Fatal Crash

LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team was deployed to the scene, where it found three parties involved: a FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck with registration number KSF 958 XV, and the dispatch rider. According to LASEMA's preliminary findings, both truck drivers were competing for right of way when the FAW truck struck the Iveco truck. The impact pushed the Iveco truck into the dispatch rider, hitting him from behind. The rider died as a result of his injuries.

"Sadly, the dispatch rider lost his life in the incident. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Okota Division evacuated the remains of the deceased and deposited them at the morgue for identification and further necessary procedures," the agency said.

Response and Road Reopening

Both trucks were removed from the main carriageway and parked in a designated layby to restore traffic flow along the route. LASEMA said the operation was concluded successfully and the road was declared safe for motorists. Oke-Osanyintolu extended condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the repose of his soul. He also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government's commitment to protecting all road users, with particular attention to vulnerable groups such as motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Call for Responsible Driving

LASEMA used the incident to call on commercial drivers across the state to stop reckless behaviour behind the wheel. "Road safety remains a collective responsibility and strict adherence to traffic regulations is essential to preventing avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads," the agency said. The agency added that it remained committed to prompt emergency response and inter-agency cooperation to protect lives and property across Lagos.

In a related development, Legit.ng reported that road accidents claimed at least 19 lives within 24 hours in Gombe and Plateau states, raising renewed concerns over speeding and reckless driving on major highways during the festive travel period. In Gombe state, nine people died following a collision involving a trailer and a Sharon bus on the Kaltungo Cham road. According to Daily Trust, the crash occurred in Kaluwa community within Kaltungo Local Government Area and was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps on Monday.
