Oba Akiolu Demands Better Education Funding, Special Teacher Salaries
Akiolu Calls for Better Education Funding, Teacher Pay

His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, has made a passionate appeal to both federal and state governments to significantly increase financial support for Nigeria's education sector while implementing special salary structures for teachers.

Royal Appeal for Educational Transformation

The prominent traditional ruler delivered his message on Friday when he received directors from the Federal Ministry of Education and principals of Unity Schools from across Nigeria. The education administrators were in Lagos for their annual general meeting and paid a courtesy visit to the monarch's palace.

Oba Akiolu emphasized that teachers play a critical role in national development through their responsibility of molding young minds. He stressed that adequate funding and improved compensation are essential for teachers to deliver quality education to students effectively.

Support for WAEC's Decision on Computer Exams

The Lagos monarch also commented on the recent suspension of computer-based examinations for Senior Secondary School final year students by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC). Akiolu stated that Nigeria is not yet prepared for the implementation of computer-based testing nationwide.

He pointed out the significant digital divide affecting various parts of the country, noting that some regions lack both reliable electricity supply and internet connectivity necessary for such technological advancements in education. However, he emphasized the importance of concerted efforts to ensure school-aged children gain access to computer knowledge.

Personal Testimony and Broader Responsibilities

Drawing from his personal experiences, Oba Akiolu revealed that he might not have achieved his current status without the proper mentoring from his teachers and community members. He lost both parents during his early teenage years, making the guidance he received even more crucial to his development.

The monarch appealed to teachers to perform their duties with utmost diligence while also calling on parents to take more active roles in their children's education. He cautioned against parents prioritizing wealth accumulation over their children's development, emphasizing that education should not be left entirely to teachers.

Oba Akiolu also advised the visiting education administrators to practice prudent financial planning for their retirement years, warning that lack of preparation often leads to suffering after leaving active service.

The delegation, led by Director of Secondary Schools at the Federal Ministry of Education, Binta Abdulkadir, expressed gratitude for the monarch's fatherly counsel and insights on educational development in Nigeria.
