LASU Clarifies Online Learning Policy: Only 197 of 4,096 Courses Affected
LASU clarifies online learning affects only 197 courses

Lagos State University (LASU) has officially addressed recent controversies surrounding its educational delivery methods, clarifying that reports of a complete shift to online learning are misleading and inaccurate.

Setting the Record Straight

In a statement released on Friday, November 14, 2025, the university's spokespersons Thomas-Onashile and Oluwayemisi A categorically denied directing students to stay at home for online lectures. The institution explained that only 197 out of 4,096 courses offered across its faculties are affected by the digital learning initiative.

The university authorities emphasized that the development specifically targets courses with enrollment exceeding 400 students, where physical classroom capacities pose significant challenges. This selective approach forms part of LASU's broader digitalization policy aimed at leveraging technology for more efficient teaching and learning delivery.

Context and Background

The clarification comes amidst growing speculation about the university's learning modalities. Earlier reports had suggested a comprehensive shift to online lectures due to inadequate lecture theatre facilities, but LASU officials have now provided precise figures to counter these claims.

Interestingly, this development occurs barely one month after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commissioned the massive LASU Library Complex at the Ojo main campus on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. Described as the largest university library in West Africa, the facility features 24-hour reading rooms, seminar halls, conference facilities, and administrative offices.

Broader Institutional Developments

LASU's commitment to educational excellence continues to manifest in various ways. The institution recently celebrated outstanding academic achievements, including awarding ₦10 million to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the best graduating student who achieved an impressive CGPA of 4.93 during the university's 28th convocation ceremony.

Furthermore, the university maintains its position as Nigeria's most preferred higher institution, having received 79,000 first-choice applications in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) 2025 UTME applications. LASU continues to emphasize transparency and merit in its admission processes, warning applicants against dealing with individuals falsely claiming to sell admission slots.

The institution's progressive approach to education combines infrastructure development with technological innovation, ensuring students receive quality education through both traditional and modern delivery methods.
